I was doing some research on galactogogues the other day, and made a list of a few foods that supposedly increase your milk supply. Most of them are things I don’t like or have in my house, but quite a few are cheap, simple foods. I googled the list – sweet potato, carrots, barley, garlic, dill -and I found a recipe that actually includes all of them. I made the recipe, and here it is, with some small adjustments for convenience (and making it pareve). At about 180 calories a serving, with about 10-12 servings (you can figure out calories using this tool), this soup is relatively nutritious and super filling – not to mention pretty easy to make. It needs a lot of salt – it’s pretty bland without. And I do think that it works, for anyone who is nursing – but it takes a couple of days until it kicks in.
Orange Soup
oil
1 onion, diced
1 stalk celery, diced
4 cloves garlic, crushed
10 cups water

3 sweet potatoes, chopped
dill, to taste
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste

Add water, soup mix, carrots, and barley and boil for a half hour
And sweet potato and spices and boil until all ingredients are soft
If you prefer cream soups, blend
